Charities Registration Board Confirms Waipareira’s Ongoing Registration

Te Whānau o Waipareira Trust acknowledges the decision of the Charities Registration Board, released yesterday, confirming that Waipareira will not be deregistered from the Charities Register. We welcome this outcome and acknowledge the considered and balanced approach taken by the Board. The full decision is publicly available on the Charities Services website.

As recorded in the decision, Waipareira accepted the wero laid down by the Board’s earlier notice of intention to deregister and made a deliberate choice to meet that challenge head-on. We did so in the understanding that the mana of Waipareira is strengthened by building and maintaining a relationship of trust and confidence with the Board and with Charities Services. This process required reflection on our practices and policies to ensure that our kaupapa Māori ways of working continue to meet our regulatory obligations, while remaining true to our responsibilities to the whānau of Waipareira.

Our response throughout this process was guided by a clear priority: to return our full attention to our core purpose serving our whānau. We carefully considered the steps required to respond to the issues raised, with the aim of strengthening confidence in our governance and protecting the whānau who look to Waipareira as a beacon of hope and a trusted provider of Māori-led services and support. The Board has accepted the steps taken by Waipareira to address these matters, and we welcome the opportunity to continue our mahi with renewed focus.

The governance, structural, and operational changes made by Waipareira are set out in detail in the Board’s published decision.

There are no changes to Waipareira’s trustees or executive leadership because of this decision. John Tamihere continues in his role as Chief Executive Officer of Te Whānau o Waipareira Trust.

Waipareira’s reporting documents remain publicly available on the Charities Services website. The audited financial statements for the year ending June 2025, covering Waipareira and its subsidiaries, have been released and uploaded today.
